Can I consider myself from Cali?

Yo, I'll try and make this quick.

Pretty much, I was born in Nor Cal, lived there for the first 5 years of my life, and I've lived in Washington since (ugh). I love Cali and plan on moving back there as soon as I get outta high school. I've always considered myself from Cali, but I just wanna know if other people would consider me from WA? Cuz I hate that I've even had to live up here and I definately don't wanna consider myself from here considering California's my fav state.

Hmm yeah that's what I worry about cuz I wanna fit in down there. I do come back down about once a year for normally atleast a week, you think that'll help me fit in better once I do live down there?

Oh yeah, I do plan on living there after high school, after a couple years in college down there will I fit in more?

I mean...you can, but most people from CA won't honor it. You get most of your cultural influence from like 8-18, and mainly from 7th to 12th grade, so wherever you spent most time during that period is usually what you are. I wouldn't claim it, because whenever you meet somebody from there, you can't identify with any particular city, and whatever city you were born in may have been the birthplace, but you probably only know as much about it as somebody who's visited once or who just knows about it from watchin TV and knowin people from there. If you claimed LA because you were born there, and told somebody in say, NY or Texas you were from LA and they were from there, after 5 questions they'd say "hell nah u ain't from LA" because you wouldn't know much other than the stereotypes and maybe a bit more.

So I'm not knockin u at all for it, and I know a lotta people who have problems with what state/city to claim because of where they spent the most time and all. But if anything, just say u are from the west coast and claim where you were made.

But yeah I can see where you guys are coming from, on the other hand though, if I live there for awhile (like once I start college then for most of my life probably) won't I start picking up on that culture and knowing the city? Like some of the rappers from the West Coast didn't start out there but still repped westside (Pac being one of them cuz most of his formative years were on the east).

Anyways, not like I can change where I've been the last 10 years, though I wish I could. I just wanna fit in with everyone else when I do come back to Cali you know?

I figure fuck it, I'm from Cali, I'll always be loving my home state even if I don't live there right now, and I've got about two years until I move back, and once I do I'll live it up to get myself caught up on the culture. I may reside in WA but my heart'll always be in Cali.

Well if you haven't even moved back yet, it would be hard to think about startin to claim it. Personally, you'd fit in a lot more just sayin you are from Washington and bein real, because people will expect you to know certain things if you said u were from Ca. And most people in CA don't really care where you are from long as you are cool and aren't tryin to act like u are hard. Those rappers moved there late and claimed it such as Kurupt and Xzibit, but they were here long enough to be absorbed by it...Xzibit had been in CA for 5-6 years before comin out, and Kurupt had been here since like 84-85 or so.

Yeah, I can see where you're all coming from. People don't ask me where I'm from very much cuz I don't travel a whole lot, except when I go back to Cali. But when they do atleast the few times someone has asked me in Washington I say Cali cuz they normally wanna know where I was born. I figure if anyone asks from now on I'll say Cali and explain I lived the last 10 years of my life in Washington.

I get what you're saying R-Tistic, I just wanted to know if I'd learn the culture after a few years there. Because I definately don't wanna be a WA guy for life.

Nah, my friend's parents were driving thru Oklahoma and they had my friend at a hospital unexpected. He's lived in Michigan ever since. He was born and the enxt day he was at his house in Michigan.

I just remembered my High School history teacher's story...his family is all from America, but his youngest brother happened to be born during their vacation in Mexico, so he was legally a Mexican citizen for a while. But he said to this day, the rest of the family calls him a Mexican.
