brahman's nba gospel: yao averaged 31.5 mpg in '05 playoffs

golden scriptures from brahman's nba gospel:

***the writing below is irrefutable truth. its wisdom is meant to be read and learned, not challenged***

the book of sidekicks chapter 5 verses 8-13

(8) even if you think yao ming is a better player than lamar odom (a falsehood), playing 31.5 minutes per game in the playoffs when the majority of your cast is made up of aging 35+'ers whose joints are breaking down come postseason time is not going to get it done.

(9) winning in the postseason requires a good team and good coaching.

(10) shaquille o'neal and phil jackson provided kobe with an instant ticket into the postseason with greater chances of winning. (11) a quick study of the playoff series t-mac had in orlando will reveal that none of the situations even compares to what kobe has right now or in the past. (12) for three straight seasons, the orlando magic faced complete teams that had the #1 seed. (13) in the 2004-05 season, his best chance of advancing, t-mac was stuck with a bunch of geriatric 35-year-olds who were starting to ache and a main sidekick who could only huff n puff out 30 minutes a game with most of his best #'s coming in garbage time against a much more well-rounded, youthful, and vibrant dallas mavericks team.

Kobe has been brilliant in the role of distributor, but Lakers fans need to give a LOT more credit to Phil Jackson than they do, especially for the way they play defensively. They could at least do better than calling Phil a douchebag.

Phil has gotten more out of Kobe and these Laker teams than Del Harris, Rudy T., and Frank Hamblen have combined.

Yao is going to be the dominant big man in the game in 2 years, if not next year.

Odom isn't even a top 5 swingman.

Dominance > Versatility.

I'm not saying Odom isn't good, but there is no way he could do what Yao was doing in the last month of the season.

Please.

^I think he was comparing Odom to the Yao of last years first round series against the Mavs.

thank you, g-rob

i was mainly showing how kobe's always had more favorable conditions in his playoff series

and, i wouldn't be surprised if this foot injury of yao's sets him back and has him returning to his more timid and tentative ways

it may take him another year to build up that nastiness again

Umm... the reason Yao was playing 'timid and tentative' was because for 3 years he had been playing through a mangled toe.

Finally on the verge of it needing to be amputated, he had surgery on it and for the first time since he came into the league, he had been fully healthy.

You should know this man.

Yao >>>>>>>>>>> T-MAc when it comes to toughness.

i have heard nothing of his toe being "mangled" all that time. that reason sounds suspect anyway, because he played A LOT of basketball. and, if his toe were truly "mangled", he would have gotten progressively worse and worse. however, he continued to improve all the way before getting surgery.

and, yao is not tougher than t-mac. period. the way t-mac's body is constructed (one leg abnormally shorter than the other) automatically puts stress on his lower back. it's going to be a constant thing throughout his lifetime. it's not like an injury that's appeared and can be played through as it heals.

plus, let's not act like yao's position demands him to do a wide array of moves with athletic contortions like t-mac has to sometimes do as swingman. these differences in physical demands make it more necessary for t-mac's body to be more fine-tuned to perform.

Go do some research then Brahman.

He came into the league with the injury, and it finally got exacerbated to the point it required surgery, when that one guy stepped on it.

Yao had been toughing it out the entire time.

Here's an excerpt from the article by Ric Bucher.

"And, two, because since he's been in the NBA, playing with pain in his left foot is more familiar than playing without it.

Thanks to the primitive level of sports medicine in the People's Republic of China, and Yao's selflessness in trying to answer every demand placed upon him by the Shanghai Sharks, the Chinese national team and the Rockets, Yao played nearly four years with a big toe whose nail resembled Freddy Krueger's grill, which made it really hard to tell when it became infected.

He couldn't give in to the pain when he first hurt it during his last season for the Sharks, because he had a championship to win to assure team officials would allow him to come to the NBA. Then he had to carry Team China on his shoulders at the 2002 World Championships, what with fellow star Wang Zhi Zhi persona non grata after opting to play summer league rather than train with the national team.

Then, of course, he had his No. 1 selection by the Rockets to make good on. Followed by more national-team play, followed by answering the bell for hard-driving coach Jeff Van Gundy. Basketball feet are never a pretty sight, but Yao's big toe was particularly unsightly after Danny Fortson stepped on it, at which point the infection was discovered. The subsequent surgery was so invasive that Yao's left foot is now a size 17, a full size smaller than his right.

As of last week, though, the absence of that constant pain had him as relaxed as I've ever seen him. Which means going back to the first time we met, the night after his last regular-season game with the Sharks in March of 2002.

"You wouldn't believe the difference," he said of having two good big toes. "Imagine playing with a rock in your shoe and not on the bottom, but on the top. Every game, every day. I got used to it, and sometimes it was worse than other times. But it feels so good now I thought about having something taken off my right foot."
