Broncos deal 22nd overall pick to 49ers for 2 choices

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The San Francisco 49ers now have two first-round picks in this month's NFL draft.

The Niners acquired the 22nd overall selection in the draft from the Denver Broncos on Wednesday for picks in the second round and third round.

The Broncos will receive the 37th and 68th overall picks in the deal.

The Niners own the sixth overall pick in the draft as well as No. 22 in the first round.

49ers coach Mike Nolan was delighted about his trade with the Broncos on Wednesday. With picks No. 6 and No. 22 in the first round, the 49ers should easily come up with at least two starters.

"At No. 6, you have a better idea of what you are going to get," Nolan told ESPN.com. "In the middle or later half of the first round, we are pretty confident we are going to get a good player.

"We need starters. We're not just trying to build depth. We've lost some players this offseason, but I think our trade with the Redskins for Brandon Lloyd gave us an extra third round pick. We maintained our fourth round pick. We're dealing from a better position of power."

The New York Jets are the only other team with two first-round picks in the April 29 draft.

The Broncos now own seven picks in the first four rounds. They have the 15th overall selection after moving up from 29th in a deal with Atlanta.

Denver had acquired the 22nd overall pick from Washington in a trade last April.

that would be nice. having frank gore and lendale white in the back field would make a NICE running game. i think the Niners should shop Eric Johnson around for a defensive player or a 6th round pick or something.

but i don't think White will fall THAT far in the draft. we also need to draft another receiver compliment Antonio Bryant.

i really hope Nolan succeeds as the Niners' head coach because i like him (no homo).

i think white will be their i figured denver might take him but now maybe the niners will get lucky..

i agree with u on nolan btw i wanted mora jr as the head coach but he left us and i think nolan makes up for that lose.

im very happy with this trade. personally i still love Kevin Barlow so im not a big fan of drafting a RB. and Eric Johnson is the man i think we need to address some other issues before we start overstacking what we already have. the late first round pick should be the best avalible Offensive lineman no doubt in my mind. the first pick should be for Hawk if he doesnt get selected one pick before us. im excited about this year now with that trade. im still very upset that we let our entire LB staff go because they were my favorite players. i felt like crying when i heard about peterson.

Ok I'm not going to rehash another Eric Johnson arguement, lets just say its time for us to phase him not....not that he was ever really "in".

Drafting White is a mistake, RB is agueably where we are the most stacked on offense, drafting OL is also a bad move. In the last 2 seasons we have taken OL early, 3 infact, let them come together and actually play a season before they get replaced....not to mention we picked up Larry Allen and even Jennings last year.

Our most pressing need is OUTSIDE LINEBACKER!!! We run a 3-4 and only have 1 OLB signed on the roster, what does that say to you, OLB is our top priority and Ladies and Gentleman AJ Hawk is no 3-4 OLB.

Look for that 22nd pick to be spent on the likes of Lawson, Sims, or Wimbley. Then watch us draft at a minimum 1 more and sign more after the June 1st cuts.

yea. i too was hoping More Jr would've been the head coach. but i'm satisfied with Nolan.

and to Ax Cess, i agree with you. it's time for Eric Johnson to go. we can definately replace him with Vernon Davis and maybe draft an OLB with the 22nd pick. i think the Niners will be pretty good with Gore and Maurice Hicks in the back field (Hicks is so underrated imo). i'm not a big fan of Barlow tho. Hicks and Gore are more explosive. i think the Niners should shop Barlow around as well for another defensive player.

we still need another WR. i didn't know the Niners picked up Bryan Gilmore. don't how effective he'll be. but we'll see.

to Ax Cess. i highly doubt the Niners are gonna run the 3-4 next year. we unloaded every guy that made up our 3-4 system. the niners ran that system because they had some of the best speed at LB in the leauge we dont have that this year. it would be silly to draft for another system. If Hawk falls to the 6th pick he is gonna be the best avalible player in the draft and our most needed position system aside. if we draft Vernon Davis i will be kinda happy because he's a great talent but i will very disappointed in its another subtraction by addition type of situation. we'll see though its gonna be interesting. hell the Niners could take the best CB avalible at the time. we need help in that position too. well we need help everywhere

Good point with the Offensive line statment. that is true. i think the Niners sign'd Allen to make it easier not to take an Offensive lineman. i know we've drafted alot of Lineman recently but that doesnt just magically make us have a strong line. cuz we dont.

We already have committed to the 3-4, we ran a lot of 4-3 also last year due to injury. We've committed by resigning Ulbrich and Smith last season, both ILB in a 3-4 system, also by resigning Brandon Moore a constant back up at all over our LB corps. Agian, just last week we signed TJ Slaughter to further fill the depth, we just need 1-2 dynamic OLB's and we're set.

Honestly I'd be real disappointed if we passed on Vernon Davis, the man is a beast and lets face it our defense isnt what got us to 4-12 it was our offense. Its not completely our D's fault they were 32nd in the league either, its our offense thats holding us back. A TE is a great way to infuse some real talent into our passing game and running game, Davis is already a better blocker than Johnson.

Also look for Pat Watkins in the 3rd, FS is a position we've been trying to fill for years.

It's going to be Davis or Huff. Bottom line.

If it's Huff, then we will most certainly take an OLB with the 22 pick. If it's Davis, the 22 pick will either go to OLB or the secondary. Whitner and Cromartie are nice looking picks at 22 if we want to go DB.

If we go Davis, OLB, then the secondary can be addressed with the third round pick. Possibly someone like Ko Simpson could fall to us there.
