Joe Paterno needs to be fired...

this guy is a disgrace to football and a black mark on penn state's reputation. you don't recruit guys with character issues for a reason. winning a championship with your team in jail is pretty much impossible. he had a good run for a while but his time has come to an end.

Negative on that. He should not be fired. Although I hope there is a plan for his successor.

You can never fire Joe Pa and he is far from hurting Penn State's reputation. He does so much for the university, outside of football. The guy is a legend and still helps the university through donations, education. He isn't just a football coach. Some years you have problems with football players and the law.

Though that piece about the football players beating up the players at the Meridean apartments on ESPN was a joke. The couple of those kids had it coming with the way they threatened and insulted Scirottos *sp* girlfriend.

over 40 players and over 160 charges in a 6 year span speaks for itself. then he denies there's a problem at all. joe paterno is a shitbag that recruits even worse men of character than himself. you're definately a penn state fan but he's making football, your team, and your school look bad.

Possibly, I don't think it gathers too much attention here because he is near the end of the road, so it probably gets over looked more. I will admit though I was embarrassed for the program last season with all those charges. However, I would not go as far as to fire him or say it is ruining Penn State's reputation. The man does so much for the university, outside football, that he won't be forced out like that. Penn State football has been on a lot of pressure here to win lately and that probably forced into recruiting people with questionable character. However, don't let that fool you though. The coaching staff and Joe Pa did so believing that they can improve and make them better student athletes for many years and that is probably why they wanted to risk it. The belief that they can teach and mold them. Granted it probably has bite them in the ass. They still have a very high student/athlete graduation rate despite the legal troubles, so they still care about their players and character.

If they did fire Joe Pa, it would make the school look worse. Penn State has one of the largest alumni in the nation, and it would have a lot of angry people to deal with. For Penn Staters, his more than a football coach, he is Penn State. I just think firing him is too much of a drastic action. Also it is probably one the of main reason why Spanier is waiting to end of the season to discuss any future extension.
