Heat sign veteran G Penny Hardaway

August 9, 2007
MIAMI (TICKER) -- The Miami Heat on Thursday signed guard Penny Hardaway, reuniting him with former teammate Shaquille O'Neal.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Hardaway, 36, has been out of the NBA since February 2006, when he was waived by the Orlando Magic just days after being acquired from the New York Knicks in a deal that included Steve Francis.


It was a brief second stint with the Magic for the 6-7 Hardaway, who teamed up with O'Neal to lead Orlando to its only appearance in the NBA Finals in 1995.

"Penny is a player who has been an All-Star and has enjoyed an illustrious career," Heat president and coach Pat Riley said. "We have been impressed at his hard work and dedication this summer to get back in shape and return to the NBA. He is a skilled player who can help us in multiple positions."

A two-time All-NBA First team player from 1995-96, Hardaway has career averages of 15.4 points, 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 688 career games with the Magic, Phoenix Suns and the Knicks.

Hardaway also played with the United States national team that captured gold at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

this ain't baseball where a pitcher can stand on the mound at 44 and still throw that bitch at least 90 mph. if you're in your 40's and if you tryna make some sort of contribution to your team in the nba, you runnin' up and down a 90-somethin' foot court at least 10-15 minutes a game. i don't see toothpick arms miller and homeless lookin' oakley doin' that.

i don't understand this signing, though. the heat just got like 5 past-their-prime ass niggaz on their team now expecting wade and his healing shoulder to carry them to another 'ship. they need to sign somebody who can actually contribute, quickly.
