July 27, 2007
MIAMI (TICKER) -- The Miami Heat got a little more athletic in the backcourt Friday, signing free agent point guard Smush Parker.
Terms were not disclosed.
Parker, 26, spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He fell out of favor with coach Phil Jackson last season and wound up averaging 11.1 points and 2.8 assists in 82 games.
In Miami, the 6-4 Parker likely will serve as the backup to Jason Williams. Veteran Gary Payton, who split time with Williams last season, is a free agent who is expected to retire.
"He's a talented young player who brings good size and athleticism to our point guard position," Heat general manager Randy Pfund said. "Smush has been the starting point guard for a playoff team the past two seasons and we believe he has his best years of ahead of him."
Joining his fifth team since going undrafted out of Fordham in 2002, Parker has career averages of 9.4 points and 2.9 assists in 246 games.
now LA doesn't even have a psuedo point guard
