I once liked all the moves this squad was making, like right after they got rid of Steve Francis for example, but now it's a head scratcher.

110+ mil for Rashard, a 85 million extension for Dwight Howard and another extension for PG Jameer Nelson down in the pipeline?

So basically you're investing 200+ million into this "core" group of guys... and unless I'm wrong, the NBA is about winning championships sooo...

Why in the world would you invest that type of money into those 3 guys?

The Magic look like a decent team but far from championship caliber. Rashard already believes they can make it because Cleveland did, even goes as far as saying "what's different about us and Cleveland?"

Cleveland was one of the east's best teams for the last two seasons and before that they were in contention for a playoff spot two years in a row. They vastly improved since drafting LeBron each and every year.

They didn't just rise out of nowhere. They have continuity and an established core. I hate to rag on the phrase defense wins championships, but they have an established one and one of the best in the entire NBA at that.

They aren't a juggernaut but good enough to hold their own in the east. Orlando isn't. They aren't going to the Finals this year despite Shard's prediction.

Lewis took those cats straight to the bank. 200 mil invested in players who would be lucky to even make the conference finals, let alone win a title.

Oh by the way Iceodu, the Sonics got a conditional 2nd round pick and a trade exception in this SIGN-AND-TRADE deal for Rashard. See what I mean by comparison what Paxson got for a Curry sign and trade.

Shard has got to be the most overpaid player of HIS caliber that I have ever seen. I thought the original figure of 85 mil was a bit much but wow. It can reach 125 mil over the 6 years, that's only 7 million less than Kobe Bryant's current contract.

Hmmm... the last time the Magic splurged this big in free agency they gave matching 93 million dollar contracts to Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill.

I expect this spending spree to turn bout almost the same.

I agree Howard was worth it, pretty much if you're a half decent rookie these days you will always get offered the 5 year max after your rookie contract expires(or 3 year max if you're LeBron, D-Wade or Chris Bosh).

For those not in the know, I saw on alot of other forums people were outraged by Rashard making more than Dwight, but since it's Howard's second contract, the most he's eligible to make is 5 years/85 mil. He won't be able to make Rashard type money until after this 5 year contract is up.

Anyways, my post is more about the Rashard signing, but I think basically when you make that move and extend Dwight at the same time, you're telling your fans that "okay we think these two guys can get us a ring and get used to seeing them for a very very long time".

Which I strongly disagree with.

Hell this team even got a blessing in disguise when ole gator head went back to florida and Jeff van gundy fell in their lap...

...because THAT would've been a major fuck up too.

BUT, regarding the lewis signing, it's won't be that noticeable right away, since they're bound to be a winning team considering their conference, but in no less than 3 years lewis will be topping numerous 'most overpaid athletes' lists until he's been traded to at least one other team and he's no longer regarded as an NBA player but rather, an expiring contract.

I'm in the business of talking all things NBA. That's what we do here, talk about sports. The money isn't coming out of my wallet but poorly managed salary caps is a fairly large part of who wins and loses in the sport.
