DETROIT (AP) -- Chauncey Billups bounced around like a basketball early in his career before finding an NBA home with the Detroit Pistons.

The All-Star point guard now will extend his career with the team he led to the past five Eastern Conference finals.

Billups and the Pistons agreed on a five-year, $60 million contract Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The person, who requested anonymity because of league rules preventing contract announcements before July 11, said the deal is worth $46 million guaranteed over four years and the fifth year is a team option.

Billups was drafted third overall in 1997 by Boston and was with Toronto, Denver, Orlando and Minnesota within his first four years in the league.

interesting, his only other option is the bucks though, he isnt going to go there. They're the only one who can really afford to match any pistons offers at this point imo, everyone else is too high on the salary cap or a horrendous fit.

Agents arent going to say the deal is closed before the legal date, they're not allowed to i dont think, which is why the first article says the name remained undisclosed due to that reason, so its not like his agent is gonna come out and say they signed it already.

Actually, Agents are the only ones who DO say the deal is done before the legal date (July 11th). Like agents for Grant Hill and Rashard Lewis who already announced their respective deals, for example.

I think the big uproar over that deal is that Chauncey's agent wanted a few more million than the one that deal proposed or maybe some sort of incentives, I don't know but I don't doubt he'll be back with the Pistons. There isn't a market for him really.

they cant say its a done deal, they can hint it at it, hell hint at it heavily, but in terms of singing the actual contract and calling it a done deal, it has to be done on the 11th.

so to hear him say its a lie, the deal isnt done, nothing is signed, isnt a surprise, im sure hes still waiting to hear a better offer, but he isnt going to get one, and if he does dumars is determined to counter it.

On Wednesday, Billups' agent, Andy Miller, refuted a reports that his client had agreed to a contract that could be five years and worth $60 million.

"This is a vicious rumor," Miller told The Detroit Free Press. "It's entirely untrue. We have not reached an agreement. I don't know what stage we're at. We're having ongoing discussions, and I don't believe that we're on the verge of signing an agreement anytime today by any stretch of the imagination."

On Tuesday, The Associated Press and some Detroit-area media outlets had reported that Billups and the Pistons had agreed to a five-year contract. According to the Associated Press, its source, who requested anonymity because of league rules preventing contract announcements before July 11, said the deal is worth $46 million guaranteed over four years and the fifth year is a team option.

Billups had become an unrestricted free agent last month after opting out of the last year of a six-year contract.

Joe Dumars, the Pistons' president of basketball operations, said shortly after the team was eliminated from the conference finals by the Cleveland Cavaliers that his top priority was re-signing Billups.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound All-Star said he would prefer to stay with Detroit and expected to be back if the team could match any other team's best offer.

Billups, 30, who played with the Celtics, Denver, Orlando and Minnesota in his first four seasons, was selected the NBA Finals MVP in 2004 when Detroit won the championship. He was an All-Star in 2006 and 2007.

He averaged 17 points and 7.2 assists in 70 games last season and 14.5 points and 5.3 assists over his nine-year career. But Billups struggled in the playoffs each of the past two seasons, and averaged 15.3 points, 3.5 assists and 3.8 turnovers in the Eastern finals against the Cavs.

saying a team whos been in the ecf or better the last 5 or 6 years in a row that only got stronger this year by ridding the weak and opening a few more doors has no chance at making another run next year is like saying the spurs arent going to make it back to their conference finals or better next year, show you know atleast a little about basketball.

And trust me, agents are allowed to announce deals as done or pending. It's the players and GM's who are under league rules and not allowed to speak on the matter until the official date.
