Well I think even if you take rings out of the equation, you have to look at the fact that Malone played with one of the all time great point guards. Duncan's guard is a raw speed demon with limited playmaking ability and doesn't know anything about shooting outside except maybe going duck hunting.

When you throw the rings back in there, you've got to say okay, everyone knows Malone did play during the Jordan era, but MJ only eliminated him twice in his career. What about the other 15 seasons? Duncan already has double the finals appearances and all the rings in half the time.

Duncan leads the most winning franchise in pro sports. Then you factor in that Duncan had to go up against the likes of Shaq at his position a few times during his run, almost nullifies losing two finals to MJ.

I factor in winning in a great deal in any team discussion. But you look at it objectively. For example, everyone right now at this point is saying LeBron is better than Dwayne Wade. Wade has the ring, but LeBron is more spectacular with even less help.

In Duncan's situation, it's a team effort, but as Cigma mentioned the other day, he's won rings with 3 different teams. When you take one player and give him different talent like that and he's still winning, it obviously speaks volumes with him being the only consistent staying piece on the Spurs.

I said I look at it objectively.

Luc Longley has as many rings as Duncan too, but it's not a clear black & white argument as you make it seem.

Duncan was the consistent leader of all three championship teams, without a doubt. He was the most valuable player on all of those squads, it wasn't even close. Horry has his rings by being a good roleplayer. Horry was never the REASON his teams won championships. That's the difference between the two.

Would Micheal Jordan be such a popular figure and considered the best had he not won a single championship? No.
