49ers made some moves: What does that mean at draft time?

Okay, so let's look at who the niners have:

We shored up our secondary with Nate Clemens, Shauntae Spencer and Harris coming off an 8 int year. We have a great punter right now in Lee. Our quarterback is a former first all-around pick who has yet been given the opportunity to prove himself on a good team, but all reports are that Alex Smith is the truth. He did lead that rag tag sorry lott of hopeless saps to a 7-9 season almost getting us into a wildcard spot, and no one expected that, considering our worst defense in the league. So then we get linebacker Banta-Cain who has seemed to come into his own in past years. Let us see if he can really function in this defense. Then we have Tony Wragge, the wide body in the middle the niners need for the 4-3 they've been wanting to run in recent years. Only problem is: WHO DA HELL IS WRAGGE??!?

Then we get this guy Lelie who at one time was a thousand yard receiver for denver, but last year only got 480 yards with Atlanta. Granted, they don't have the most receiver friendly offense there, but I literally have cousins and friends who have done better in the league and are not presently on any team. We also have Frank Gore, and I don't need to say anything about him. 2 replaced knees, one replaced shoulder, and 1500 yds! That's like my grandmother running over defenses. We have a decent running game. Getting a back up for him late in the first day/early second day may be a good move.

so now, let's look at where we need help. We got rid of our top receiver Bryant and brought on Lelie, a relatively unproven has-been/never-was. We have shored up our secondary enough where it's a "let's see what happens" situation. Drafting high at that position is irrelevant overkill at this point. We have a very solid QB and a Tight End who is a freak of nature but hasn't been able to play yet due to injury. He should be up and running this year literally. (Dude, a tight end running a 4.35 40 at 255 lbs??!? That was the steal of last year's draft. He could be a deep threat easy.)

But we still need a pure receiver. Lelie is alright, but he can be the JJ Stokes to someone else's TO or Rice. We need a Rice. I think we have one in the draft that will slip down far enough to fill that position that everyone is sleepin' on:

Dwayne Jarret.

Dwayne was the Receiver of choice for the QB we should have got in 05: Leinert out in SC. When we had bush running and leinert at QB, Jarret caught for 1200 yds and almost 100 yds/game. Without bush and a wack ass Booty qb (literally), he still was a 1000 yd. deep threat, even though he was the number 2 guy behind 'SC's steve smith. They say he has 3 faults: He's not that fast (neither was rice) he gives up on routes (so what? 1000 yds. is a 1000 yds) and he is hard to coach. (I repeat: 1000 yds is 1000 yds.) anyone has to be better than TO or Bryant who were assholes. He's also the tallest receiver in the draft. (Last year, we had a ton of sub 6ft receivers who have proven to be nothing at the next level. Dwayne is 6'5 and 215. He's literally a 21 year old TO. Ted Ginn at 6ft 180lbs is JUST TOO SMALL to be the threat he was in college at the next level. Not Jarrett.) He is clearly poised to be the deep threat dumbass executives think Lelie is gonna be. He is very young and likely will drop down to late first early second round. He'd be a steal at number 11. He may even be better at the next level due to intangeables than the number 1 overall college player bound for Oakland: Calvin Johnson.

Troy Smith:

Why this guy is considered a late first day early second day draft pick is beyond me. This is the heisman winner, people. His numbers speak for themselves.
Size: 6'1" 215 (not too small, but not optimal)
Rating: 114.7
YPG: 195.5
Yds: 2542
TD's: 30
Ints: 6
Yds Rushing:204 (over 600 his previous years. This means he has learned to be a pocket passer).

He has a bad work out in the combines, now he's not only the third QB behind Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn (both of whom have lower QB rankings than Smith). This may make him a steal in this draft. You know, trading fodder for next year.

What do y'all think?

If my niners select Jarrett at the 11 spot, and he runs any more than a 4.5 at his pro day I will vomit. There are much better prospects on the board than Jarrett, if he runs what he is rumored to, which is a 4.7, I'm all for taking a chance on him in the 2nd but no higher.

I'd rather go defense, then shore up WR in the 2nd with:
Meachem
Bowe
Rice
Jarrett
Hill

in that order, ofcourse this is with the assumption that Calvin Johnson cannot be had, and Ginn who I also hope we dont select at 11 is gone.

edit: I find it odd that you would say Jarrett is a 21 year old TO, seeing has hes much MUCH slower. Remember TO ran in the 4.3's coming out o college....I seriously doubt Jarrett will do the same.

I'm pretty sure TO ran a high 4.4 in the 40. Maybe even a 4.5.

I'm pretty sure San Fran is switching to a 3-4 too. I see them going defense in the 1st round. Switching over to a 3-4, their top priority would be a NT. If by some miracle, Alan Branch was around, I'm positive they would take him. Maybe they take Amobe Okoye? I highly doubt they go with a WR in the 1st. It's just my opinion, but Ginn will be wack, and the talent at WR dries up for a while after Calvin Johnson. They'd be better of waiting til the 2nd round to draft a WR.

If I were you guys, I would cross my fingers they don't take Ginn.

Michael Robinson was a solid #2 running back last year, you just better hope frank gore isn't the 2nd coming of kevan barlow.

as for the draft, they need depth at O-line, especially with newberry leaving for oakland and larry allen being about 58 years old. Like GN said, Alan Branch may be their guy, especially with Bryant Young getting up in years. WR is a need, but not a draft priority imo.

yup niners started making the swith last yr to the 34.. but much like when oakland tried it, it didnt look so good.. the front 7 they had wasnt very effective in the 34.. rookie pick manny lawson also didnt do much as an edge rusher..

branch would be a good pick but not okoye, atleast not as a NT.. he could probably play DE in the 34 but hes much more effective playing UT in a 43.. hes one of these warren sapp type, undersized penetrating DTS

also disagree on the Wrs.. this is one of the deepest wrs drafts in history..

As for dude being a young TO, I was speaking about his size and ability to catch the ball at the highest point. He can go up and get that ball. Also, speed is entirely overrated in the draft. Fast players tend to not matter over more talented but slightly slower players. It is the intangibles that matter once you determine someone is fast enough.

Jarrett is fast enough. Now, clearly he's no calvin johnson (who might even shit on TO within a couple years) but he's damn good and would give our completely underrated QB something to aim at down field. However, that brings me to my next point:

One of you said steve smith is a better receiver. I tend to agree wholeheartedly. He ran a 4.38 and was the leading receiver for USC last year, not Jarrett. I literally forgot all about him in early analyses of the draft because dumbasses have him going in the second round and no one mentions him when discussing the top receivers in the draft. That has to be one of the greatest oversights of the year.

If they let him slip that far down the draft board, then the niners more than likely CAN draft an NT this year and then grab a valid receiver like Smith in the second round if Jarrett is not available...
