Mel Kiper Jr. On Troy Smith, Discuss...

i listen to sports radio on the way to work, knbr (bay area radio station) was talking to Mel Kiper Jr...talking about the Heisman, said pretty much the Heisman discussion isn't needed, Troy Smith already won it pretty much...

then they talked about the nfl draft, said that Brady Quinn can mess up all he wants in the bowl game and will still be the #1 or #2 pick in the draft, then said Troy Smith will win the Heisman but will end up bring a "2nd or 3rd round draft pick"...do you agree with that???...

I personally think that Smith should go before Quinn, but that's just me...i don't really rely on Kiper to begin with, once the combine starts he'll have another new list of heads...

I know Smith hasn't declared for the draft since he's a junior, but be real...he is not a 2nd round pick...if someone like the Raiders get a 1-3 pick (which they currently hold at least one of the top 3 picks, they'd be dumb to not take a qb...

but no way is troy smith a 2nd or 3rd round QB

quinn will prolly be the 1st qb taken, and then troy smith #2 (as a qb)

Troy Smith is a quarterback... in the context that he can take control of a game and lead his team to the win...

Wouldn't you think that Smith is better suited for the NFL than Vince Young?

1, Troy Smith is how tall?

2, I hardly think his resume is on par with Young's

1. About one inch taller than Drew Brees and Michael Vick... Within an inch or equal to the same height as Favre, McNabb, Romo, Lohsman, Kitna, Grossman, Garrard, Gradkowski, Brunell, McNair, Delhomme, aaand Jeff Garcia.

14 NFL starters this year that are between 6'0 and 6'2... I think 5 of them are 6'2...

That's just under half of the NFL starting a "short" quarterback I guess...

You can do the resume Comparison of Smith and Young when the college season is over... Young's draft status was escalated due to his performance in the Rose Bowl.

Yeah, but you know the NFL ain't looking for short guys unless this guy brings other factors to the table that are overwhelming. How else do you explain things like Jay Cutler taken so high. I know that Favre, McNabb, and Vick have some of the best arms ever to be in the NFL.

I don't really know about Kitna, and Grossman taken so high is a product of Chicago's stupidity.

So how many of those guys other than Vick, Favre, McNabb, and McNair were the first QB's taken in their respective years? I'm not even sure Favre was the first QB taken his year either. I'm saying that the NFL looks at prototypes rather than production first. Receivers like Steve Smith do dominate. But unless coming out of college a receiver under 5'10" has prolific, and I mean utterly ridiculous numbers, you won't see a 5'8" receiver going 1st overall any time soon.

Because a 6'4" receiver can be taught to do whatever. Can they teach the 5'8" guy to be taller?

And height is definately prized at QB, more than, if not as much as any other position.

Smith is being compared to Young because he was a first round draft pick, and wasn't really thought to be an NFL type qb until later in his college career...

I know height is a good thing to look at when picking your qb...

but there have been alot of tall qb's that were taken high and failed...

Tim Couch 6-4
Jeff George 6-4
Ryan Leaf 6-5
Kyle Boller 6-3
David Klingler 6-3
Dan McGwire 6-infinity

These guys went pretty high in the draft... and there is an equal amount that are 6-2 that also failed...

Point being... if he is a good qb... and you know he got what it takes to win... you might as well try and work with him...
