So do I. I see Cotto as a harder punching version of Julio, who Quintana took to school. Ok, if Cotto repeats the performance he displayed over Malignaggi, he'll have a field day, but Quintana seems so much more solid.

Cotto can slug, but he hasn't impressed me with technical skills or cemented his chin. On the flipside, Quintana was downed by a sloppy Julio hook. If Quintana can pick off everything Cotto throws, he'll cruise by. And I think he might do it. Quintana by UD.

I absolutely agree. I've seen Joel Julio about 5 times and each tie i thought he was a nifty little puncher boxer in the same mould as Cotto. Good power, good boxing skills.. but Quintana done a number on him.

Quintana has good power too, which Malignaggi didn't have.

I think Cotto hits harder than Julio... Julio was over rated in my eyes... looking at who he has fought tells the story, dude made his name KO'in cab drivers in his country.


Cotto hits harder and is better than Julio... lol in Cotto's last two fights he has broken a cheek bone, broken and jaw and I believe dislocated a shoulder

I would say he definitely hits better than Julio, but maybe not harder... julio has a good ko ratio at 147 and cotto hasn't even fought there yet. We don't know if cotto's power will carry up well yet, once we know if it does or don't, then we can see if he hits harder than julio.

But true, the only name on julio's record was a TKO of vilches who's pretty rugged and can make you look bad. Cotto has fought at the better level, but at a lower weight. Cotto's moving up, but i seriously think he's made a really risky decision, and i commend him for it.. i think maybe he don't know what hes getting himself into, though.

I think quintana has a good chance of winning, its a 50/50 fight for me.

Another great fight coming up - Arnaoutis Vs Torres for Cotto's vacated title.

Cotto never really impresses me boxing wise... but when he lands his punches they come with some force. If his power carries over then Quitana will need to not slug with him.


I kind of think Cotto may actually have more power at 147.

If you think about it like this.

Cotto DRAINED himself so much to make weight at 140, so yeah overnight he recovers some... but his big ass prolly couldnt recover to 100% overnight. Possibly leaving him a little drained during his fights.


That 7 extra pounds that he doesnt have to drain himself to make weight might actually be beneficial to his power at 147

Yea i agree, Cotto often comes in around 156, so that 16 lbs loss is big for him.. and holding the weign in for malignaggi 36 hours and not 24 hours before definitely helped him re-hydrated more.. He looked like skeletor at that weigh in.

His chin SHOULD really be more solid at a higher weight as i suspect it was due to him being weight drained that he's been in trouble recently, we'll see however about that.

I think Quintana will trade for the first couple rounds.. feel Cotto's power, like he did julio.. if he can't take it/can't win like that, i can see him boxing more.

Word... Quitana def has a great shot at winning this.


Paulie opened peoples eyes up in his fight with Cotto... he basically showed Cotto can't really box with a boxer for shit.

If Paulie hit a little bit harder he woulda beat Cotto.

Probably the best commentator is on showtime - Al Berstein, dude is boxing smart. But as abovementioned, it's hard watching a whole card with showtime lol.

According to a news report from Puerto Rico, the Miguel Cotto-Carlos Quintana fight is now official. Oktay Urkal, who was supposed to be facing Quintana for the title, accepted a deal from Cotto's people to move aside and allow Cotto to fight for the title.

Cotto is 27-0 with 22KOs, and has never fought at welterweight before. This should be quite a test for him. Quintana (23-0, 17KOs) is a southpaw who can either box or punch, as he showed in a very dominant performance over super-prospect Joel Julio this summer. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Quintana walked right through the hard-hitting Julio's punches.

The fight will take place on Showtime on December 2nd. It will probably be the biggest fight between two Puerto Rican fighters since Tito Trinidad squared off against Macho Camacho in 1994.
