Uh, house shows are far from pointless. The WWE makes a great deal of the their money from house shows and they need their stars to wrestle in them in order to drive up attendance.
Personally I think that if Sting doesn't want to work a full time schedule he doesn't deserve to be in the WWE. They should just build up a new superstar. I would like to think they would have learned by now that bringing in the old guys doesn't work out. Look at Nash, Hall, Hogan, Goldberg and Steiner.
