ON THE MAT LOOKS AT THE ELIMINATION CHAMBER

ON THE MAT by Michael “Mad Dog” Tearson for 8.14.03
Real life just keeps getting in the way of WWE booking, doesn’t it? With the long awaited SummerSlam Triple H vs. Bill Goldberg title match morphed into a 6 man elimination spectacle, all bets are off who will be World Heavyweight Champ on Raw August 25. Today the Mad Dog will try to analyze that match, and next week I’ll look over the rest of the SummerSlam card.
Triple H, of course, is champ going in. His challengers are Goldberg, Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Chris Jericho and Randy Orton.
Let’s look at each man one by one.
TRIPLE H: Upside: Certified tough man and longest running champ in WWE. Works through injuries that would cripple most men. Holds title with a stranglehold. Downside: Is injured going in with groin tear, always a slow mend. His injuries just seem to keep coming one after another. In the view of many has been champ too long and has gotten stale.
GOLDBERG: Upside: Would be a fresh face at the top. Another certified tough guy. Has undeniable charisma. Downside: that charisma is not respected universally. He, too, is injured going in. Has limited repertoire in his ringwork. Will not work a full schedule unless WWE and he agree to more dates than his contract obligates him to do.
SHAWN MICHAELS: Upside: In ring performance has far exceeded anyone’s reasonable expectations upon his return last year. Always gives his all in a match. Downside: Was champ for a month last year and might have a “Been there, done that” stigma because of it. Cannot work a full schedule due to needing to give his back time to recover from each match.
KEVIN NASH: Upside: big, big man whose charisma speaks to fans far better than I’d have thought. Always a great politician, he could be the right man in the right place at the right time. Would have a natural feud with Chris Jericho upon nabbing the strap. Downside: Very limited repertoire in the ring. Never very mobile.
CHRIS JERICHO: Upside: Has excellent charisma right now plus a great worker in the ring who is injury free right now. Was the first Unified WWF/WCW champ and keeps reminding everyone every chance he can. Downside: His first title reign wasn’t a great success, and in retrospect he was a transitional champ before the Triple H era of Unified and then World champ began, but this was not necessarily his fault.
RANDY ORTON: Upside: A bona fide young lion who is growing rapidly into a premier performer. Does seem totally recovered from his shoulder injury. Is building heat all the time as an ever improving heel (but being around Triple H and Ric Flair doesn’t hurt either). Downside: Could be perceived as too green to be perceived as a credible champ at this time. Has a great, glowing future, but not ready yet for the top in many eyes.
So who will win this thing? I eliminate Nash, Michaels and Goldberg. Nash because he will need time off to make his movie, Michaels and Goldberg because they would not be able to defend on a full house show schedule. Triple H should lose the title here if only to give that spot some freshness and to give him time to get back to top shape, something he hasn’t been in too much since his return from that infamous quad tear. He has seemed injury prone ever since.
That leaves Jericho and Orton. Logic would propel Jericho as the winner in some flukish, undeserved looking finish which he could then brag about as a fantastic win in his Highlight Reel segments. Similarly Orton would not win as he has far too little seasoning for the spot.
PREDICTION: Remembering the three way in which Diamond Dallas Page went in as an afterthought and came out the champ, the Mad Dog predicts the next World Heavyweight Champion will be (gasp) RANDY ORTON, the one competitor nobody gives a chance to going into the match. This would give WWE a chance to elevate him and hopefully turn Orton into a money player.
