cracking its stone shell open,
& he would awaken to a dawn that could break a lion’s heart..
& he would awaken to a dawn breaking like the city’s taxi cabs’ engines,
& he would awaken to a dawn breaking into the dark.
& he would awaken to a dawn,
broke down like the conspiracies of the innocent..
& he would awaken to a dawn breaking,
just a little bit bent.
& he would awaken to a broken dawn,
colored w/ popped balloon bits..
chased & recovered by the crows that once flocked the telephone wire,
& he would awaken to a dawn,
as plexiglass shuttered the crescent of moon chips.

it was the butterflies in the tornadoes,
it was her halo of flickering neon,
it was the cherubs in the hurricanes,
it was her co of castaway whispers..
it was the way she laughed,
it was the way she cried.
it was the way she danced with such a pride.
it was the way she woke me every morning,
letting me know she had something – one thing – all figured.
it was the way.
it was her way.

& she would situate herself at the mirror..
hunched clumsily over the counter,
slipping into her usual work clothes..
sliding into a beautiful pearl glow.
as she ornamented her neck in a shimmering décor.

& she would apply her makeup -
tuesdays & thursdays it was a blueberry mascara & an indigo blush..
monday, wednesday & friday it was auburn eye shadow & a bit of a copper touch.
but every day of the week it was cherry lipstick..
yea every day of the week it was cherry lipstick .

it was the hummingbirds & the truths & the long walks home..
it was the raspberry pickings on an april morning..
it was the way she wrapped our names in a heart and carved it into the oaks.
it was the way she’d watch the dandelions forming.
it was the way she slowly nodded her head,
with her eyes sunk in the bottom of her palms..
it was the way she slowly nodded her head,
with her eyes fixed on the bible,
& a tight grip on her rosary beads,
reading the psalms.
it was the way..
it was her way.

yea cuz there was a time when they were midnight walkers,
barking the moon’s fall,
yea there was a time,
a time when they were driven to redemption with cans stringed to the fender..
a time when he never knew what time was,
seems then, things seemed a lot more simple,
but now he sees the difference between the fall and the winter.
so now he sees the differences between the jester & joker..
yea now he sees a difference -
the difference between the lesser, the yes sir, & the no sir.
