The crime…
The night was cool and calm just like every night should be.
She was awaiting her friend’s arrival – pulling up in his SUV.
He needed to retrieve his glasses, which was the reason for the visit.
They were left earlier in the day & she told him to come and get it.
She invited him inside – “I can only come in for a minute,
Cause you know I have a wife and don’t want her to get suspicious”
A sigh escaped her lips quick, then said “it’s fine if you have to go,
It’s just my ex has been calling a lot and I’m scared to be alone.”
They walked inside the home, it was a condo in East LA.
She just moved there after the divorce, hoping to bring peace her way.
The dining room was the area they to chose to sit down and chat,
And as she began to speak there was a noise from around the back.
“It’s him, he’s here,” she yelled as her ex-husband came inside the house.
Wielding a knife and gloves, he said, “I’m here to re-claim my spouse.”
They began to scream and shout, & tried to get outside the gate.
But it was too late, a knife would soon decide their fate.
The ex-husband walked up to her friend, a deadly fight ensued.
Fists against a knife, of course, tonight he’d lose.
The blood began to ooze all over his gloves and shoes,
Eyes now set on his ex-wife, who was too afraid to move.
She was looking back at him, no words, her mouth was speechless.
Thinking this can’t be happening and I really cannot believe this.
So he decided to break the silence, before becoming violent.
“If I can’t have you, no one will,” his wife remaining silent
She was sitting on her knees, just crying in disbelief.
Which is when he used the knife to slit her throat from cheek to cheek.
The after-storm…
The next morning the scene is discovered, by a young sister and brother.
Not knowing what they just witnessed & that the victim is their mother.
The police are eventually notified and begin their investigation.
Already naming the ex-husband as a suspect without any hesitation.
He sees this on the news and then a slow-speed chase ensues…
Cause he knows he left evidence at her home for them to use.
Knowing he will lose, he gives up, so the police can take him in.
To custody to notify him of the charges facing him.
There he is booked and arraigned, receiving looks of shame.
Cause everyone thinks he’s guilty, while he claims that he was framed.
The prosecution will have an easy case, the facts are clear to see.
But he still hires high priced lawyers since he can afford the fee.
If he is not found guilty, then surely justice has not occurred.
Reasonable doubt is the defense’s case, & the jury will have to infer.
The trial…
Opening arguments begin, and the prosecution makes its case.
“The couple was just divorced, which is why this crime took place!
We have his blood & gloves which he left behind in haste.
Surely this will be enough to make him pay for his mistake.
Our investigation shows the male was the first one that he hurt,
And we found the defendants hair lying on the victim’s shirt!
He had beaten his wife before, police were dispatched to the house,
And this is circumstantial evidence you cannot forget about!
He committed these heinous acts, while their kids were fast asleep,
And we can prove he bought the knife because we have the tax receipt!
But the most compelling fact and the one you can’t deny,
Is after his ex-wife’s death, he ran, and didn’t act surprised.”
The prosecution rested its case, & the defense began to take its stand,
“Our client happens to be black and the detective is a racist man!
Who has ulterior motives in landing this conviction,
So at the least his words should be under some suspicion.
The blood and hair found at the home was left by someone else.
If u were to commit this crime wouldn’t you do more to protect yourself?”
The lawyer then asked his client to test the glove and see if it would fit…
“And as you can see its way too small, which is why you must acquit!”
The jury left the room to decide what they would say…
“We find the defendant not guilty”, is the decision that they made.
The ex-husband sat up from his chair, and began to exit quick…
Because he knows a guilty man was just found innocent.
A jury consists of twelve people who determine which client has the better lawyer - Robert Frost
