If it wasn’t comic books he was reading, he was writing stories
Boredom always showed its face,
After mom left for work in the morning.
Ever since the neighbors moved, he never had a thing to do
so in his own childish way, he sang the blues….
The birds sang too, and at night the insects came to life
Each noise an incentive to write, giving his brain insight
But this wasn’t enough to be happy, he needed a friend
With mom never around, and a dad someone he’d never see again..
This changed though, one day, the day he’d never been so happy
The day he peered out his window to see a u haul, with kids and a family
He watched the sale sign collapse, glad to have some neighbors back
Especially some with kids, which wasn’t so, with his neighbors from the past
In a dash, he threw his shoes on, and with all the excitement of the hour
Walked towards her, in their first introduction, hoping she would like the flower

Seeing her through his window, she appeared as an angel from the sky
and when she opened up the door in person he saw the halo in her eyes
“hi” is all he could muster, she saw the flower and thought it was neat
She smiled and closed the door,
But it wasn’t the last time she would see the boy who lived by the creek.
Soon, they were with each other daily, always meeting by the fort
That protected them from the rain when reading stories, under the lighter’s torch

On days that were nice, they played outside, when no one was home
Sometimes pretending to be sex operators who spoke over the phone
It was all to pass time, and as it passed when they grew
This boy slowly began loving the only friend that he knew.
He often wished to express his feelings, but didn’t want to ruin what they had
And love wasn’t something he knew much of, never seeing mom give it to dad
He was a year older than her, but she seemed so ahead of his time
That when she began spending time with others from school he lost his mind
Being the only child, he valued things that would light up his heart
and valued this girl, who he dreamed would be his wife, right from the start
but as their maturity aged, the days of childhood were appearing to fade
for the girl, who had big dreams of sitting on beaches, hearing the waves
having tuition paid through scholarship, it seemed her fate was to attend
Berkley where she’d be too busy working to remember hurting her friend
He helped pack her bags and each item slipping into her storage
Had him feeling like one the bears who came home missing their porridge
She kept mostly clothes, he watched her throw away the old phone
That they use to play with outside before they were grown
He felt his childhood slip away once the last was packed...
When they were done, he sat and cried, wishing he could bring his past back
But that wouldn’t be enough to keep his dream alive,
He couldn’t breathe inside, so walked outside to see the sky
Did god want to see him die? How would he live without her?
How could she leave him when he knew all the little things about her?
She assured him she would keep in touch as she boarded the filled buss
And as the doors closed he froze, too afraid to fully spill his guts
As it picked up speed to leave he ran to try and stop it
But the driver didn’t see him in his way and just then, he got hit
From the hospital room, he woke, with her hand stuck to his
And with her smile she told him that he was lucky to live
Seeing him injured in bed with wounds that would permanently cripple his world
She knew in her heart that he deserved to be with his original little girl…
Her dreams of college life and career to follow, took a back seat
To the love she always had for this lonely country boy who was sweet
She remembered the first time they met, when the love was first found
That moment he looked into her eyes with a flower he dug from the ground…
She vowed never to leave him, in a month they were married on a beach with sand
And to this day, they travel the streets side by side, hand in hand
In a way that only people who have had true love can understand.
