She Had A Black Eye

She had a black eye
Burgundy with purple splashes maybe
A ring of dysfunction encircling
a white glassy sphere of frustration
Dark oak brown innocence
and in the center
pupil window to a soul
that knows
all too much about :

Pain


She had a black eye.
And she looked at me
with so much insecurity
As if she was begging
“save me
save me”
And in that moment the pink and yellow barrettes
that framed the face of this
6 year old girl
likened to a halo
of purity
tainted by the mother who stood by her side


She had a black eye.
and, maybe I was too presumptuous to think
this
22 or maybe 23 yr old
Fireball of anger inside
Young girl for a mother in disguise
would do this to
her own flesh and blood
but she wouldn’t look at me
She wouldn’t look at me
This young mother
and almost shrunk 3 feet closer to the ground maybe
she needed to be 6 feet under.
I couldn’t help but wonder what the
cotton sweater
and blue jeans hid
on the young precious girl
Maybe a couple bruises and some welts
Scabs and sores
Let me tell you
There is little I abhor more
than a physically and mentally abusive parent
But what could I do
In all actuality
I could be
Reaching too far into uncertainties
But something deep inside me told me
What I see
I should believe

She had a black eye
And I watched the body language of the two
Hard stressed it seems this mother
Hand wrapped around the wrist of this little girl
tugging arm almost to withdraw from sockets
And little girl
grimacing with each tug
Lord knows I
wanted to say something
But what business was it of mine
Could I have possibly have made
this situation bigger than what it was
I mean
The fact that it was
40 degrees outside
and the girl was wearing a coat too small
and flip flops
Snot encrusted in her nose
and candy residue on her chin
that had picked up the last couple hours of lint
No
None of this was any evidence of mistreatment

Right?

And she had a black eye
I wanted to cry
Wanted to take the girl in my arms and
shower her with charms that
every little 6 year old girl
needed to see and feel.
Tell her all the things
every little 6 year old girl
needed to hear to heal
And just hold her and remind her
what it’s like to be loved.

And for a second
for a second
the mother looked at me
for a second she looked at me
and I saw a rage so putrid that I
became nauseated
Because in this maybe presumptuous
exaggerated
misguided mind of mine
I could see the consequences of
my attention
being given to this child when she got home.
And I prayed this was wrong
I prayed it wasn’t true.
Prayed that this was just some
unfortunate woman
with little means to
do the things
every
little
girl dreams
But as they prepared to leave the store
the little girl came to me
and arrived at a halt
Looked at me and said
“She didn’t do it, it was my fault”
She had a black eye.
She had a black eye.
She had a black eye.

This was very good. I mean.....I could quote, but I feel the whole piece in itself does the trick. The multiple ways you described a black eye, and the frustration and both physical and emotional pain you put into words was breathtaking. Good job.

But yo this poem was deep/dark/sad/heart pounding stuff....I love the storytelling vibe....smooth unforced flow....use of vocab and the overall story itself.....it was powerful.....stood on its own....the only weakness to this one is it is a bit long....where it gets repetitive but in the many stanza's your able to bring the poem home....I'm not sure you could have that same effect if you chop it up ya know?....Ive been experimenting with my poems and noticed that when I cut a poem short thats exactly what I do I cut it short so the reader might loose all the love and work I put into it and the message and what not I was trying to get across....(which I decided to do with my "American Way" poem broken up into 28 chapters)......but you wouldnt care about all that now would you

wow....
a true story?
anyways my mom used to work with kids
now she just writes for a small local newspaper,but
sometimes i read about young kids dying just because a parent/guardian just became lost in a rage...
and the innocent kids have no where near the strength that the grown adult has...
its like they probaly really never could realize really how much damage they can do,
just when they think,they didnt even hit them near as hard as they really could...
its scary,
very sad thing to see
this was a beautiful poem....
