A better day
I walk slowly,
In sandles through
The grass, wet
With morning dew
This deserted campus;
Silence is the sound
Without the fuss
No more tests
No more papers
Just the squirrels
And me,
In the early summer heat
This is what I love
About this place
To walk through halls
Of knowledge
When no one calls
Or even sees my face
Deserted,
As students take steps
Toward summer plans
I can stand alone
With all the thoughts
I've known
With only the ideas
That I can really call my own
Without the pressures of
Fitting in,
Without the worry
Of forcing grins
Just me and myself
And the squirrels
And the occasional chirping bird
Self-assured,
Without competing ideologies
I feel free,
To actually be me...

Love of mine, someday you will die
But I'll be close behind I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light, or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight, waiting for the hint of a spark
If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
