NICHI AND THE STREAM
One day in a small village a boy named Nichi was born. Growing up this boy never fit in with the other children of the village because he always felt he wanted to reach new heights and see the world in a different way. All the other kids were happy with their lives and the way they seen things. One night Nichi broke down and cried for hours completely overtaken by his loneliness and need for somebody who could understand him just a little bit. He felt that he was incomplete and would die for the adventure his soul desired. The next morning he packed his bag with clothes and food and left the village in search of something grand...
After 2 days of hiking to the base of a mountain and said to himself, “What better way to see the world than to climb this mountain and look at the world from up there instead of down here?” So he began climbing, and climbing and climbing. Finally he reached the top of the mountain and looked down at the village and could see how small everything was in this new light. After viewing the side of the mountain he had just climbed he turned and looked over the other side in awe…..
He had no idea the beauty he would find that he never knew existed on the other side of this mountain he had seen his whole life. He ran down the slope in joy and right to a stream. As he reached into the water and splashed his face to wash off the dust he looked into the reflection. He was amazed. He finally could see himself. So he decided to live with that stream. The stream had shown him something he had never noticed before and he refused to leave that place in search for something more pleasing to him because he felt that in all his life he’d never known a beauty like this or happiness he could call his own.
As time passed, Nichi sometimes wondered if this was the only stream or if it weren’t just the one to introduce him to happiness. He often thought maybe he should continue on his journey in search of a perfect stream for him. The current stream had beautiful green fields all around it with big bushy trees as far as his eyes could see. But he felt there was something missing. It wasn’t the stream because the stream was beautiful but it just wasn’t the stream where he felt his home would be. He fought this idea. He loved the stream and what if he left this beautiful stream and climbed another mountain only to realize that stream was the only stream for him? He knew he couldn’t climb back and return to this stream. He continued living near the stream. One day he decided to climb the mountain just to see what was on the other side.
This mountain wasn’t as tall as the previous one and Nichi quickly reached the top.
Once at the top he glaced down onto the other side and seen the most beautiful sight he’d ever laid his eyes upon…..Beautiful palm trees and flowers that were purple, pink, red, and orange. There were no green fields and bushy trees but these new surroundings somehow touched his soul. He glanced off in the distance and seen that there was also a stream on this side….This stream was the one he had been dreaming about since he began his journey.
The only problem was that by moving he would be going on a very long journey for the mountain on the other side dropped straight down and there would be no way to descend on it. He glanced around and noticed that he could walk around the mountain to the west and maybe could find a path that led back to the east from there. One thing was certain. He had to take the journey. He knew it could be possible that by going west on the mountain he could never find his way to this new stream but it was either he try and fail or continue living with the stream that is beautiful but not what his heart is seeking.
He left the mountain and began hiking back to the stream. On his hike he was confused.
“What should I do?” asked Nichi. I’m happy but still not complete. He returned to the stream and slept. The next morning he sat looking at the stream and realized how blessed he was to find it. Before he came to this stream all he knew was the small dusty village on the other side of the mountain. He didn’t want to leave the stream because the stream had been there for him. The stream had shown him a new level of happiness he often questioned could exist.
Now that he realized that second level of happiness exists he’s a better man but after seeing a glimpse of the surroundings on the other side he knew he’d never be content with the stream. Though many men from his village would give anything to come across this stream he felt he needed something else. He made up his mind. He would continue his journey but he must leave a blessing for the stream. He could not just take from it and leave nothing. He lay down beside the stream and prayed to his God.
“Father, please do not let this stream go unseen by others. Send another from the Village to look for me and lead them to this place so that the stream may have somebody to enjoy her beauty and what she has to offer. Send somebody that will build a home with the stream and reside with it.”
The next morning Nichi left on his journey. Unsure of if he would ever reach that stream he knew he had to try. As he began hiking he looked over his shoulder and seen the stream he had just left sparkling in the sunlight and knew he’d never forget those years spent with the stream.
Some stories are just stories. Others are parables.
It’s the reader who decides which is which.
