The Beginning of a Storybook Romance (Part 2)

You want to me entertain you, to tell you a story
you always want to hear a story
so I try to read you one, but you always turn the page
before I can get to the ending.
You can’t read the middle, the middle is where people get hurt.

So here is our medieval love story. I will slay the dragon for you
and save you from that tower, and it’s all very dramatic
but it doesn’t matter.
Here is our coming of age story and we will overcome the odds
and be together and everything is happily ever after then
but it doesn’t matter.

Look, you wanted to be the princess, so you’re the princess.
You’re the southern belle, the debutante, the femme fatale.
You get to be wooed and longed for
and everyone wants to be near you
and you love it, that’s the easy part.
But it’s always time to cut your losses before Act II
because even though the beginning isn’t always happy
the middle always hurts
and it’s that thought that makes you want to run away.

I offer to skip to the end ,but you say the ending is never as good by itself
and you can’t get to the end without going through the middle
so can we just start over again, baby?

Here are our collected tales of love and hate and tragedy and redemption
through sacrifice, but none of that matters because the hate and tragedy
are too much to deal with and the love and redemption
just aren’t worth the trouble.
So now I’ve slain the dragon and declared my love but the tower is no longer
occupied and the princess has already moved on.
Watch the soldier’s triumphant return and the glamorous ball, everything is so cinematic
leading up to the passionate reunion,
but our absentee princess has excused herself,
leaving in her place a stack of notices:

To whom it may concern,
While I appreciate all of your efforts, I regret to inform you that I am unable to join you for this happily ever after.

Dear John,
I love you, but Act II simply does not fit into my plans. In the next beginning I would like to be beautiful and wealthy and living in an exotic paradise. I hope you will be there to sweep me off my feet again.

My dearest,
The world would be perfect if everything was pink and soft and sugar-coated. Make the world perfect and I will love you forever.

I tried to make your perfect sugar-coated world, but I couldn’t hold the stories together.
I told you about this, and you thought it was a trap.
You thought I was going to tear out the pages at the beginning and end and trap you
in second acts forever to keep you for myself.
So you ran away, and I haven’t opened a book since.
