I used to sit and stare at this picture at his mom's house. There was something that captivated me. Perhaps it was his smile that still shined when he would let it show, or perhaps it was his eyes that I would be lost in. His eyes and his smile had not changed after all the years between the young man that he was and the young boy in that picture.

Often after his mother and I would finish in the kitchen, she would send me off. I would be anxious to see him when he would come home from work. Sometimes I would go into his room, but most often I would find myself in the front room. I would never have the intention to sit and stare at that picture. The picture of this young boy who was now grown, would simply captivate my glance.

Since then, we have gone our separate ways and I have visited his mother when I am in the vincinity. I find her glad to see me. She had told me that her and I would always be friends. I remember the day that I came to visit and the picture was gone. The room was different, it changed. It was a subtle disturbance.

It is painful sometimes, but pain is a part of life. I cannot say, "I never would have thought," and I know life is accepting change. Although I often think about his eyes and how they were the same, his eyes have never looked at me the same. We cannot take back words and make things right again. He is different from the young man I used to know. Gone with his boyish ways are my girlish dreams and waiting for those eyes to stare back at me.
