Illmatic, although a masterpiece technically, is more regarded for bringin' back that overall "hip hop" lyrical feel than it is for being purely a dope album.

I remember when I first started pumpin' Illmatic, it was like I was listening to Paid In Full, Criminal Minded, Radio, Low End Theory, etc. all over again... it had so much soul and was an instant classic like those other records...
