Should Michael have killed Fredo? Why or why not?

This question has always bugged me and I can't figure out which is the proper response.

morally? or for the movie?

for the movie, it works...micheal needs to kill him for obvious reasons. as the godfather, he can't show weakness by letting fredo off the hook for betraying him(which nearly got michael killed), even if he is his own brother. seeing as how important family(and loyalty) is in italian families, that is one hell of a message he sent out.

as far as it being morally/ethically correct? obviously, no.

yes, Fredo was a traitor. he almost got Michael killed because he was being selfish, trying to get a little extra for himself. it was all a matter of principle.

to tell the truth though, Fredo bugged me from the first moment he came on screen in part 1, so i was kind of rooting for him to die. the actor who played him played an annoying, bumbling idiot well.

I'm still so conflicted on this. I understand why he did it, because Michael had to be precise and methodical with his business... but at the same time, that was his brother.

Hagan: "You won. Do you wanna wipe everybody out?"

Michael: "No, I don't wanna wipe everybody out... just my enemies."


Fredo was a bumbling fool, though, which is why he got passed over. Also, the big thing was that he almost let his father get murdered in Part I. The stumbling twit couldn't even get a hold of his gun to shoot back.

The biggest foreshadowing comment came in Las Vegas near the end of the first movie:

Michael: "Fredo, you're my older brother and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever!"

So considering that, I guess he had to be killed when he aligned himself with Johnny Ola and the Rosato brothers.

i would have done the same if i were Michael Corleone...without any inner reservations or hesitance.

you could take pity on Fredo for being a complete idiot...that he didn't know any better, but any simpleton knows betrayal is a no-no. a man with no honor, dignity or respect is dead already.

I think definitely not, but you have to get into his head. He felt so betrayed that I guess he couldn't not do it. The thing that I don't get is Fredo told Michael that he had no idea it was gona be a hit, and he said he believed him. And Im pretty sure he was tellin the truth, right? I dunno what he should of done, but it was pretty cold waht he did.

^Fredo was effectively his bodyguard at that moment because Tutalia had already took care of Luca Braci. He should've had his hand on his heat and been on the lookout while his pops was getting fruit. Why is that Vito sensed the ambush BEFORE Fredo did? C'mon... he's a clueless fuckin' idiot. And they shot at him for at least 5 seconds, which should've been enough time for Fredo to pull out and bust back.

No, what was really COLD is when he pretended to forgive him by embracing him at their mother's funeral and then looking up to give the order to his hit man.

Michael transformed into a cold, calculating mastermind after the assassination attempt on his father. The way he closed the door on Kay was cold, too.

Yep. And how Fredo was about to take Michael's kid to teach him how to fish and then at the last second he takes him away and shiit, and then that. That shit was cold blooded. This thread makes me wanna watch those movies again, even though I seen them soo many times.

Of course michael should have whacked fredo, Ferdo was dumb an almost got michael whacked, all because he wanted to flex as if he could run the family. If michael didn't whack fredo, ferdo most likely would've fucked up again. Fredo was envious of michael because he was skipped over and not made DON.

The most conspicuous thing I noticed about those movies, particularly the first two, is that it was truly a "man's world." You got to know a little about what Connie was thinking, but never their mother. She was practically silent through the whole thing. It may have been generational differences as their mother was old school and probably taught to be submissive and silent. Kay, however, was the strongest female character and I think she is what led to Michael's downfall. She never supported his allegiance to the mafia activities. That splinter in his immediate family influenced some of his moves and weakened him. Connie hated him for awhile because he had her husband killed, but he could handle her. It was Kay who was the difference-maker and drove his quest for redemption in Pt. 3.
