I think that the answer is completely dependent upon which striking art the fighter chooses to practice. If a guy is going to mainly train Muay Thai and/or kickboxing, then I think BJJ is really the only option. He would have to be comfortable being on his back so he can kick with confidence.
If a fighter is going to primarily train boxing, then I would suggest that he focus on Judo or Greco/Roman wrestling. I think this way, if a bjj guy wants to clinch to take him down, he will probably put the bjj guy on his back instead. The reason I think it is too late to catch up with wrestlers that have been doing it their entire lives is just from my experience wrestling in high school. The guys that had been wrestling since they were 8-10 owned everyone that just started in high school. Even the good athletes' ceiling if he just started in high school was qualifying for state, but they never won once they made it to state. Maybe I'm wrong about it though.
