Ricky Hatton crossing over to MMA?

Ricky Hatton is best known as a heavy hitting boxer who suffered two high profile losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. And now, Randy Couture hopes that the two-time IBF and IBO light welterweight champion will try his hand at MMA, and is willing to train the British professional boxer in ground game if he comes to the UFC.

"I am a big fan of Ricky Hatton,” Couture told the Manchester Evening News. “He is a fantastic fighter. I could get him up to speed on the ground wrestling part of it, while he could take advantage of his boxing talent. He could make a big difference in the lighter categories.”

Couture says that if Hatton could learn the “ways of the UFC,” he could go far in the sport.

“He is a tremendous fighter and has a lot of heart. There is no doubt he could make a tremendous impact with his heart and determination in the ring,” Couture stated.

Hatton said that he may consider the move from boxing to MMA, since the momentum behind the MMA sport is growing.

"It is all action, proper fighting. [The UFC] are going the right away about it to get people interested. There is a concern in boxing that UFC is taking its place. People seem to get more value for money,” Hatton stated. “UFC would be right up my street, I used to kick box so maybe I would be all right."

Better to be a washed up high-profile boxer than an up-and-coming WEC challenger.

So basically, not only will Hatton be running into punches with a glass jaw, he'll be going into clinches with no matured grappling experience.

That said, I don't think you need to have been wrestling since you were 3 to be any good, but Hatton has proved he is incapable of learning anything. His boxing career was cut short because of his refusal to develop his style and weed out the negatives.

If he can't sufficiently defend himself in a discipline he's been practicing his entire life, then he'll be a grappler's wet dream.

I guess one positive is that he's good in a clinch.

It's true that you can become SUFFICIENT in most any art pretty quickly, but it's usually still only enough to survive against guys that have been doing it forever.

But I mostly just wanted to say, there's no way you have a legit black belt in ANYTHING studying for only 1-2 years.

Its impossible to get a Judo blackbelt in 2 years...the absolute fastest (assuming you were a prodigy) is a little over 3 years. There simply are not enough competitions for you to compete in to accumulate enough points for a black belt.

You don't live and train judo every day in Japan... And no, I don't have a belt- I test in February...

black belts don't mean shit to be honest...

It's only the Western view that says black somehow makes you an expert...

all it means is that you understand the art and are finally ready to learn it...

Even so, someone who's put the time and work in to get a black belt in a grappling style will be much better than most of the guys you see today fighting MMA... The actual number of "elite" grapplers are few... most are only sufficient...

I'm not sure but the system in Japan may be different from other countries since there's only white and black... You only need 2 ippon and you can get those at the test...

notice I said legit black belt.

black belt don't mean shit because there are so many handed out. People started giving them to practicioners as rewards for training rather than rewards for mastering. but yeah, black belts are supposed to mean something.

i don't mean any of this as an insult to you in any way. Keep doing your thing, but the watering down of the belt system irks me a little.

Like I said- Western view- you should read actual Eastern literature on martial arts- the only thing "legitimate" is the ability of the practitioner and to base that on the color of their belt or the time that they've been training is kind of short sighted in my opinion.

To explain further- In Japan there are no colored belts- you are white or black. Once you become black you begin real training and are able to compete against better judoka or train at better or bigger schools- certain places will not teach you from the very beginning...

Once you get black you are only the second level- from there you have 10 level or "dan" to become a "master"... Olympic level is around 4 or 5 dan and each level is exponentially more difficult.

Personally, I love judo so I'd like to get to that level at some point, but, even that is not mastery.

Just youtube the late great master Mifune...

The only people who look at a black belt as some mystical symbol of expertise is Westerners who grew up watching the Karate Kid instead of actually training...

You can try to put labels and paint it as "legitimate" or not- but, its really pointless to judge a skillset by the color of one's clothing or the time they spent doing something...

Its no more amazing than having a college degree- there is nothing mystical about it- put in the work, take the test, pass the test... It's knowledge, practice, and hard work basically...

Lol, stop acting like you're the only martial arts practitioner here you condescending cock. Mystical views of martials arts was birthed in the east and spread to the west.

But anyway, this started over your first post where you acted as if 2 years of training put you on the same level as other black belts, as if ricky hatton could just focus on something for two years and be competitive with the best grapplers in the world. Not true. Two years can buy him a clue, but not necessarily a prayer.

my bad if I'm coming off as condescending- I just don't like when people limit what they and others are capable of by trying to justify why they can't or won't be able to do something. I don't believe shit like that and in my opinion this is why many don't accomplish as much as they could. Most of my relatives are like this and are always looking for ways to bring you down, or tell you why you can't or shouldn't do some shit. As an individual I've done everything I said I would to this point- and that's not to big up myself because I naturally suck at most things- its a testament to the fact that if you visualize, believe, and work hard you can do whatever the fuck you want- let the limitations of others be there problem...

At the same time, you ARE correct about a few things. Is a new black belt likely to be world class level in grappling? Absolutely not- as I stated before its a beginning point, but, they will certainly be more competent than many MMA guys. The number of "elite" grapplers in MMA is few- this is limited to the BJ Penns, Shinya Aokis, Karo Pariysian(sp?), Brock Lesnars, Fedor Emelianenko- guys that are "world class" in their respective arts.

My original point is that if someone like me who doesn't have the money or best resources and isn't the best athlete can put the effort and time in to take what had been a weakness for years and bring it up to a respectable level, then surely a professional fighter with nothing but time and money should be able to put the time and effort in to do the same- which will be easier if they focus on a grappling art than if they focus on only MMA which is where I think guys like Kimbo fucked up...

Problem is....The best in his division will consist of Aoki, Penn, Edgar, Sanchez, K-Flo, Maynard and Alvarez....

2 years of wrestling and BJJ is not sufficient to hang with these guys...You have 10 year black belts, and NCAA all-Americans in this line-up....

Lightweight is an extremely tough division for those new to grappling...
