Auto Maintenance....

Ladies... who maintains your automobile..?

I got to thinking about it a minute ago... my car's been running hot lately, so today when I took my grandfather to the store I asked him what I should do about it:

Grandpa: how long has it been doing that?
Me: about a week
Grandpa: *looking at me like I had bird shit on my lip* Boy, I tell ya... women don't know know anything about cars
Me: Well, noone has ever taught me *duuuuuuh*. So what do I do about the overheating..?

The ladies in my family took care of making sure I was domesticated... okay... I've got that covered. But, aside from some of the the basics - my dad showed me how to change a tire and put oil in my car- none of the men in my family really took the time out to teach me how to keep my car up.

A lot of auto mechanics prey on women customers, so I'l often have my dad take care of it when something goes wrong... but I'd like to be able to handle it myself in the future and feel confident dealing with mechanics. I signed up for an introductory course on car care this summer at my community college, but ended up not being able to attend... I think it would do me good to sign up again and stick with it!

Anyways... ladies... your experiences..?

My husband takes care of all that. I mean, I grew up watching my dad and asking him questions. But I couldn't remember half of it if my life depended on it. But my husband does all the work on our vehicle. Thank God. Cuz it could get costly. However when I go to bring it in for things it NEEDS. I do notice they try to run me for my money. Thinking I'm stupid. I always tell them tho "Well, I'll talk to my husband first. See what he thinks. Till then I'll just get done what i came here for". Leave it at that. Because I have no idea what they're saying. They could be right, or they could me taking me for my money. I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Also, if I'm alone driving and something happens. Or if my husband is at work or not around. I'll call my dad. Always callin him up with something. He told me actually the other day I need to start carrying this and that around. He said it's better to be safe and know what I'm doing instead of being stranded. I laughed and told him that's why I have a cell phone with his number on it lol. He just laughed and gave me a look lol.

Right now since I have a fairly new car Honda maintains my car.. When I had my other vehicle I did most of the easy stuff myself. I changed my oil once a month since I did ALOT of driving.. I did my sparkplugs a few times but all of the other stuff my dad or a friend did as a side job..

I'm what I like to refer to as a Gas and Go girl...other than putting the gas and a few other fluids in I'm pretty much lost. My dad is a mechanics and so are a few of my uncles so I leave that stuff to them

I have a friend and one time she about killed her car. Her man at the time took a look at it and asked her if she had changed the oil recently...she was like "I have to change the oil?" ROFL

Nobody in my house is that knowledgable of cars. I don't really care. ..tis not like men are born with innate knowledge of repairing cars. Walmart changes the oil..mechanics fix shit..and god forbid I ever get a flat tire I'm fucked but thankful for the cell phone to call for help lol

My dad built cars when he was young.. and then wrecked them and rebuilt them.. So throughout my childhood I got to hear all the stories about that and ended up picking up quite a bit of auto knowledge.. And I had a POS car for three years that broke down at the drop of a hat so I had to do some of my own problem solving. Annnd now my brother in law works for Ford as a mechanic so he's always telling me loads of information about cars that he thinks I should know.. Its great actually. I love knowing about cars.. I know more about them than my boyfriend, which secrectly I think he hates.. but I think is fun. *smiles*

I went to Midas once when I had a rattle in my muffler and my idle was set too high... I tried telling the mechanic what the car was doing.. and he listened and then looked at my dad and said " so.....what is the car REALLY doing?!" ......I was so pissed off. My dad said " Exactly what my daughter just told you, are you deaf or just stupid?" lol I've never been back to Midas and have NO plans of returning.. Oh and Les Schwab is a tire/brake place in the northwest.. I'll never give them any money of mine again..

I would do it anyways.. Even if you don't get your money back at least you're letting the company know that females aren't just gonna let it happen.. My sister went in to get her tires rotated and they brought her car out to her and my brother in law looked at the tires and said " you guys didn't move ANY of the tires, go back in and DO something or we'll be leaving without paying anything" I was shocked that they would do something like that.. but.. if they feel like they can take advantage of them then they'll try.. I always call my father or brother in law if I'm unsure about the price I should be paying for a repair or maintenence because places think women are stupid and won't think twice or ask questions.

Yep so true. It's rather disgusting if you ask me. I'll do the same thing, make sure I know before hand what I need to get done and how much it's gonna be.

My vehicle had started smoking or something right beside a garage. I had my son with me and I freaked the fuck out. Jumped out, grabbed him. Then went to a pay phone. Called my husband at work. He told me go and ask the garage if they can look at it. I thought it was going to blow up lmao. Shows how much I knew ;o) So I went and got the dude, brought him over and he laughed at me because I thought it was going to blow up. Then told me I needed this new part that was like 1000's of dollars and I was just shocked. I'm like, yeah right. So I told him I'd leave it there over nite and have my husband come take a look at it. Sure enough the part only cost 30$ and we knew a dude that could put it on. WTF ever. I hate that garage and will never go back there. That isn't teh first time they've tried to rip me off. Tell me one thing but then my husband another.

In that respect I'm glad I don't deal with it on my own. Although my dad is pretty knowledgable about cars and if I didn't have a man he could get shit straight for me if that could even me a possibility I would be pissed off from the moment I walked in somewhere to get my car fixed.
