Erick Sermon is a top 5 producer all time... he created the foundation for "hardcore" easily... before Primo, Alchemist, RZA, Harry Fraud and all of the other gritty sound producers.
EPMD was just pure, authentic hip hop... no frills, no R&B, no bullshit... anybody who was a fan of hip hop in the late '80s and early '90s were fans of EPMD.

The bar is too high for Detox, and Dre calls himself a perfectionist. There's still a long ass wait if he still has a good ear... because so far if the material is like "I Need A Doctor" is a no-no.

I think you're talking about Back in Business, their reunion album. They broke up after Business Never Personal in '93 and then reunited in '97 for that album.
Business as Usual had "Gold Digger," "Rampage," and "Rap Is Outta Control"... all those classic jams... it's their BEST album to me... and it was released in '91.

Dre is scared to flop, like Floyd Mayweather is scared to lose... he's had a near perfect record and he don't want to mess that up.

Remember how vehemently he responded to the critics of Aftermath on 2001?
He took that shit personally... he wants everyone to recognize his shit as hot.

Yeah, that was dope... and their Jane series... which Reggie Noble mimicked with his Superman Luva series.
Redman had some of the best guest appearances of all time on Business as Usual... "Hardcore" and "Underground"

I've always thought it was only half good, too.
It's not even close to the original Chronic.

I can't really judge 2001, tbh. I don't like it as much as I used to, but I bumped that shit so much during the first couple of years it came out that I think I'm just burnt out on it. I'm so familiar with it it's almost like hearing someone tell me the same story for the 100th time.
