I think that stretching and warming up are very important. Stretching should be a no-brainer, I do that before and after I lift. But if you're wondering what warming up can do, for me it just loosens me up. Gets my blood flowing a little bit. Whenever I go to the gym I spend at least 5 minutes on the treadmill after I stretch, just to get loose. I think warming up also prevents injury. It would be like jumping right into a basketball game without stretching. I don't know, if you haven't been warming up before lifting, try it, and see if it feels better. |

i feel i sometimes do better without a warmup actually but then sometimes i do 100x better with one. right now for chest ill walk into the gym, put my shit away, grab the 100's and do 6 presses.
i really think the difference is the amount of weight you will be using and if you have any injuries. |

i think the exercise you start off with matters too
pullups are way harder to start with than benches

you warm up because when your muscles are warm they're more receptive to the workout, hence you get better results in the gym.

warming up is essential. when you warm up (even lightly for 5-10 mins) you increase blood circulation and temperature to your muscles, and lubricate your joints with synovial fluid which keeps your joints moving smoothly. this allows for better efficiency, better movement, and prevents injury.
and stretch after your workout, not before.

when you warm up to squat, you arent going to jog first, youre going to squat still but just with lighter weights and work up to your working weight. sometimes you need to warmup on exercises longer than others. for example, i have a bad left shoulder so when i do bent tri exts i do a lot more warmup up than i would with say a curl, which i never warmup for. the amount of overall weight youre using and how prone to injury you are should determine your warmups. |
