That's why all of these were so succesful, launched many classic titles and sold millions of copies, right? I mean, they weren't gimmicks, I'm sure, right?

Yea, But see, those were crappy peripherals that weren't necessary to get. The Wii controllers themselves are actually part of the system, and that's just how the game works. The PS3 controllers also has motion-direction sensors, but u dont see anyone making a big deal out of that.
The Virtual Boy had shitty games and shitty graphics, and that's why it flopped. But you didn't NEED to use it unlike the Wii controllers.
The ROB system was another useless peripheral, but uneccessary.
The Power Glove failed because it just didn't work, but once again, uncessary to purchase.
Those are all gimmicks, but the Wii on the other hand, is more of a change in game play as opposed to the hand held controllers that's been console standard for over 20 years.
Besides, from what I've seen and heard, the Wii controller actually functions pretty good overall. So it's not really a gimmick.
Besides, it's not like gimmicky peripherals are totally useless. What about the Super Nintendo Super Scope and countless "Gun" controllers for shoot em ups, or "Wheel" controllers for driving games.
Gimmicks CAN work!
