The best things i can suggest for one NEVER TOUCH THE T.R.O.Y. sample (lmao just kidding eventhough i wouldn't.. but that Tom Scott joint my one of own personal records i own but wont sample)
but seriously tho... eq is everything... from the drums themselves to the sample.. sample eq is crucial as if there are unwanted parts in the sample, u can possibly get rid of the via eq'ing. I chop melodies from one record and use a bassline from a completely different record for example.
As far as drums... as previously stated, grab as many drumkits as u can possibly find... a producer's arsenal of drums is his biggest weapon. Try listening to old records n lifting drums outta breaks as well... eq them and layer them however seen fit. I almost always chop up ol school drum breaks and rearrange them to sound a little different (ie funky drummer or something)... then add elements to them to add ambiance or just make it thump harder. Once again EQ the drums... u want them to sound sharp... but not too sharp to the point where they stand out in front of ur melody TOO much.
that's all i can think of at the moment... nice start tho! If u ever need any tips... hit my PM up and i'll be glad to help out wherever i can. I've been on this site for a minute... but haven't really posted regularly since like '03... eitherway i still check the site so i will get atcha'!
