tips on making the kick bang hard in FL without over-doing it

^ that wont help for crap.. thats just like a default lay out to play with.. it all depends on what kit ur using.. sounds.. and so forth..

all comes down to compression/eq..

and mixing it live as possible without clipping..

its all about experimenting.

Actually Frequincy, that is a pretty good starter setup. That will get you the needed punch out of the kick. Tweak to taste from there.

why would you compress a kick drum sample? There are all kinds of low frequencies that you don't hear that will sound like shit when you do that..unless you have a seriously nice monitoring PA system, you have no idea what you are compressing if you comp your kick drum.

instead layer your kick 3 ways..first layer your sub..second your mids (EQ this around 800 for "knock") ..third your attack click...do those jus right and you will have a nice knocking kick drum sound. leave the compressor alone....

then send the sub straight to your 2 bus..and send the other 2 layers to a drum submix, and lightly compress the whole thing to glue the kit together.

thats what i dont understand....the whole point of compression is to make the sound signal hit at a more consistent level.........if u playin the same sample at the same velocity over and over again, compression aint doin a damn thing

those compression methods for kicks niggaz be gettin from online is for ppl who record live drum perfomances.........unless u got a drum set and a gang of drum mics, that template is useless to you

throw some rbass on the kick, set the harmonics to about 60hz and call it a day....if u have to do THAT much to a kick, then u need to delete it altogether...most the time i dont do anything to my kicks except maximize em to bring em towards the front of the mix without raising the volume.....

Another thing the Pros do to get their drums to "bang" harder is CLIP them, about 2-3 DB over 0...if u look closely at most producers drums in a wave editor, ull sere there mostly squares...LiQuiD6 pointed this out to me

Everone from Scott Storch to Kayne to the Heatmakerz do this...

the only ppl i notice that dont really do this are south producers cause it sounds really distoreted when u clip an 808

however this doesnt sound very good when u do it digitally on software, it sounds better when u do it on hardware

clipping=gangsta hahaha...thats old school bang factor right there

the real problem is that your instruments/other drums are taking up the frequencies where u want ur kick to bang...u need to give the kick more room by using some eq..cut everything else towards the bottom and ur kick should bang more.

also don't rely on the volume meters..use ur EARS..make 1 mixdown before u go to sleep then when u wake up the next day with FRESH ears u can make some bangin changes to it and it will be fire trust me..I do this a lot lol

u right about that....but thats not digital clipping.....thats analog clipping which is gonna sound a helluva lot better than digital clippin and the engineers are the ones doin that...assumin nobody here is really workin with high end analog equipment like that, i suggest ya'll stay away from clippin
