I used to use Ableton Live 6 until my hard drive failed (a couple days ago). I think I will put music on the back burner until I finish my degree and land a job. After that I will probably try to learn how to use an MPC and cop a bass guitar. Which raises the question, which is used for hip hop bass, acoustic or electric?

both, electric and acoustic.
really depends on the sound your going for.
I'd suggest you download Amplitube along with it since it has TONS of bass amps/FX/mics options for you to mess around with

do producers buy software nowadays? Everybody recommends an assload of programs, I hear different ones every time one is recommended... and I know you don't usually get quality for free.

Nah man.
If it's softwear, no matter if its 40 or 2000 dollar program, u can find it for free.
all u need is a cheap midi controller that can trigger the softwear and ur set.

i try to buy software... but i pirate most of my shit to be honest.. i did buy reason 4, ultra analog, drum kits, etc.. check audiomidi's website... they from time to time have amazing deals..
if you cant afford or just learning.. then pirate at first.. but when you are in a position where it pays itself.. i'd support these developers.. they make your music even possible..

^^is it difficult to learn all those programs? or are they all pretty much the same?
like if I know Ableton Live will I be able to pick up on Logic, Reason, or Protools with the quickness if I've never used them?
this is a good freakin thread, I'm really just trying to figure out what direction Ima go in when I get back into beatmaking with a whole new setup in a year or so. I appreciate people answering questions and giving advice it really helps.

the only program thats remarkably different than all the others is fl studio
i mean, there's obviously gonna be slight differences in how things are done when you go from program to program but they all work generally the same

FL studio production
Recycle - chops/groove templates
Audition - editing / post production
Ableton Live - Record / Mix
A handful of trustworthy VST instruments
Sonnox / SSL / T Racks - for the FX
Guitar Rig - for FX
and a few other VST fx for special filtering FX
Nothing too crazy....in fact, i rarely use most of this in a given week.
Depends on what hat im wearing.
Im planning on buying that melodyne with DNA ...that's gonna change the whole game.

basically all programs run along the same system. if you spend time with one of the main DAW programs and really learn the ins and outs then using another one shouldn't take no longer than a day learning curve. If you ever have problems with a program there's always the net and if you want a visual then yo8utube is your best friend
