Computer Seems To Freeze With Alot of Takes - DOCTAH?

It's mostly with my boy, he's an R&B singer and has alot of tracks because of harmony and adlibs and blah blah all that shit. It's on a CEP session. It may be the way I mix, that kills my speed. I'll record all the takes, I'd say for him it's usually around 50-60 tracks. I go into each track (editing form) and compress each track individually (I know it takes forever) ... Then I'll go to FX find the proper EQ while playing it with the beat, then save it as a preset. Then I go to all the other tracks and press FX and use the shit I just saved. Then I individually go into each track (editing form) and add a reverb to my liking. I know there is faster and more sufficient ways, I believe. After I mix half the tracks and listen to the playback it'll take a few seconds for it to play and the computer freezes and I lose all my frickin' tracks. Is this because I'm mixing the wrong way by doing the shit individually? or do I need a faster processor? I have 512MB of RAM and a 2.4GHz processor.

Any help please?

50 tracks?

If you're using that many tracks - I would get more ram. Especially if you're trying to use FX for them all. You're asking a lot of your PC.

...and I would try using a different program. I'm a big fan of CEP - but I would think something like Cubase would work better when you have that many tracks in one session....especially when you're trying to put that many FX/Tracks in one session.

Maybe try bouncing some of those tracks/takes down before you start putting reverb on them.

Most importantly - organize yourself. If I were you, I would have a folder for the song. Every now and then, save the different takes and individual components of the song (and the session too!).

...but I can admit - a song with 50 tracks is out of my league. I'm more on the hobbyist tip. I feel like I'm doing big time shit when I have 10 tracks - hopefully someone else w/ more experience will hop in.

Yeah, with all those tracks, your gonna need about 2 gigs of fast memory -- it'll help a lot with memory-leakage, too. Also, remember to update to the latest drivers, and make sure their working properly.

you are haveing what is called a dropout....try changing your buffer size to a higher number....for example if its set at 165 put it up to 256 than 456 and so on until the problem stops....

Where I go to change that?

Is 50 tracks really alot for a singer? Well even when I rap on a song, it's about 20 tracks.

Thanks for all the help, this problem has been happening for a while now.

^ When you sing, do you do harmony and everything? When he sings and does "harmony" or whatever he double's up 6 times, 2 times for his hi's, 2 times for his mid's, and 2 times for his low's ...

Listen to http://www.soundclick.com/thegeniuses
"Tell Me Why You Left Me Feat. C-Mac" He did the hook for me, that took I'd say about 15 tracks for just the hook.

record in stages....do all the instrumental stuff at one time, mix it down to one track, then do all the main vocals, mix that to the instrumental track, do backup vocals, mix that in, do something else, etc, etc, etc...

thats how its typically done in a studio anyways...especially if your only using a small console haha...
