Layers and having an understanding of music theory helps greatly.

~Mister~Roush~
You can actually make a hook sound pretty good when you sing over it by harmonizing. I had this chick sing a hook about a month ago. She couldn't sing for shit really, but I had her drop several voice overs tyring to harmonize each time. Eventually it ended up soundin' like it was supposed to be exactly how it sounded even though individually each track sounded stupid. You just have to experiment. Make sure your lead vocals are turned up when you record the voice overs. You will hear when it sounds good in your headphones. Trial and error.
