Theres a ton of programs nowadays FL Studio, Reason, Beat Thang/Beath Thang Virtual, Pro Tools/Presonus Studio One/Cubase/Logic + plugins. Just download demos of each and see which one you are comfortable with or like the work flow of.

I would say use a program that works for you. My best work comes out of reason 6.0. Tho, You have pros still using fruity loops, and you can make some bangers with that program. So really if you can learn them all. It wouldn't kill you to

Fl Studio + Pro-Tools. The set up really doesn't matter you just need to feel comfortable with the workflow. The DAW is just a tool.

Depends on style you'll be doing. If you're going to make music with complex melodies/basslines/voiced chords and you're using a midi keyboard, you don't want to go with FL Studio. If you're doing Trap/Pop hip-hop stuff, FL is the right choice. You can then just write in the notes, this is useful for doing simple chords/melodies.

If your music won't be too complex (not using midi keyboard), I'd use FL. If you're doing more complex stuff, I'd go with Cubase/Reason or Logic.

Hope this was helpful.

I am using Audacity (free), Hydrogen Drum Machine (free) and Slice Audio File Splitter if I want to auto chop instead of of doing it manually (also free).

I also have a Roland SP 404 but since the right channel went out I don't use it much.

Logic Pro is the most complete platform for making beats, the MIDI and instrument catalog is extremely deep

if your just starting out the best in my opinion is fl-studio its running with most of all the top daw's and it has endless options you just have to take it a step at a time and learn the program and all its functions but its the easiest to start with due to the layout and flexibility.
