Vocal Sampling

sup, im real new to sampling & i was wondering if there's any specific tricks & tips to it, mainly im trying to sample vocal files & speed em up to give it that "chipmunk" effect thats so popular nowadays.

is it sufficient to just speed up the pitch? or do i need to mees aroundwith the EQ? coz i figure thats already been done if im sampling a track that was professionally mixed

on a side note, does anyone have the acapella to Sam Cookes - Change Gone Come? been trying to find it for ages, where do u al get your acapellas from? i've tried torrents, youtube, acapella sites, everything

any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Sampling is super easy.. depending on what type of sampling you can use just about any software to do this.. it's simply a matter of cutting out the wav you want to keep and saving it as a wav file.. making sure to get the exact start and end points accordingly.. start point is more important.. I try to sample at musical intervals whenever possible to be able to effectively loop it.. so in other words.. sample exactly a bar. or four bars, or however many bars make up the part you're sampling.. just makes it a bit easier if it's something that you'll be looping.

as for eq and other effects / filters.. that all depends.. remember that the goal is not to make that individual sample sound best by itself.. the goal is to make it fit in the song that you're using and make it sound the best it can in the overall mix.. so.. that could mean you will need to eq the sample or not.. plug it in and see what it needs compared to the other elements in the arrangement..

changing the pitch can be tricky.. not sure what software you're using.. If I were trying to get this effect I would pitch it up on the sampler I'm using and just play it.. or you could use elastic audio to do it after the fact if you use pro tools.. best of luck to you.

no hate..

but "chipmunking" vocals was real popular from 2000-04... now'a days its revered as overdone and redundant. I'd say honestly ur best shot would be to just use the vocals in regular pitch... chop em up and place them in the right places accordingly.

OTHERWISE "chipmunking" can be quite simple.. just need to raise the pitch.. if your record ur sampling's speed goes up as the pitch does (past your desired bpm that is).. just look to an audio recording program (such as a cool edit) and slow the tempo of the record down as much as needed (which would more than likely slow it down waaaay below ur desired BPMs.. save it...then place it in your program or sampler... pitch the sample up and you'll get the chipmunking effect and it should match up ur desired BPMs at that point. If not, then go back to cool edit (or whatever u use) and just tweak the tempo a bit again.
