Is the "album" as an artform dead?

These days most people download music (either legally or not) and (it seems to me) just throw it into their itunes shuffle. The music industry, for it's part, focuses entirely on singles and videos.

so are "albums" dead?

in a sense you could look at it as that way. I mean look at all these ringtone check rappers. the increase amount of one hit and out artist. You still have your multi platnium selling artist but the major of artist out there arent doing numbers and it does seem like execs are focusing on singles and videos. Mims had one of if not the biggest single this summer and what were his numbers? Did he even go plat? im not sure but i dont think he did.

exactly my point but he had one of the hottest singles and crazy right tone sales. we are in the stage of ringtone rappers right now

that is terrifying...fuck a ringtone

i'm curious about your thoughts outside of the commerical aspect tho...cuz as far as I'm concerned commerical rappers havent been making ALBUMS for a while, just making collections of singles and wanna-be singles. But even in the underground now, with so many people download albums and then listening on shuffle, or downloading tracks one by one, etc., seems like a lot of the thought that goes into making an ALBUM (consistent vibe, logical track order and flow, etc.) is pointless to everyone but album reviewers for magazines and shit.

even though mims album bombed he had 2 high ranking ringtones and the amount of dough he made off them is equivelant to if his album went triple platinum. the industry is fucked in my opinion. look at it like this they rather make one hot song that makes them album type money instead of makin an album. to make an album that means making a minimum of 12 songs pretty much sitting in a studio for months and the cost of production on a whole album isnt worth it to the execs anymore..all they gotta do is have one hot producer make a beat turn the song into a radio hit and they'll make more money than they would off releasing an actual album. its hard to sell an album but not as hard to sell a ringtone. look at the souljah boy track and the hurricane chris track there both monster ringtones..but lets see how long u'll be hearin about them i doubt u'll hear about them after the song fizz out. one thing though i do gotta show respect to one artist thats doin it and thats chamillionaire he has the highest ranked ringtone to date and still flips albums and stays relevant. he got that hip hop police track wit slick rick which is another ringtone monster plus his album came out and i believe it already went platinum. homie made $12 million off the ridin dirty track in ringtone sales alone and that was just his cut. it netted close to $50 million and the track didnt cost more than 10k because it wasnt made by a high ranking producer.

The album as an art form for hip hop in the mainstream is dying, but it still works well for independent/local/regional artists.

It's dead...Rapper's don't make "albums" anymore, and people don't sit down and listen to "albums" anymore. I don't know anyone besides myself and my cousin who really sit down and listen to an album all the way thru when they get it. But even that is hard to do now becuz rappers don't make listenable albums anymore. They record 4 potential singles and the rest is filler, and sometimes they happen to luck out and some of those fillers songs are decent.
