Old School: 1974 - 1985
Golden Age: 1986 - 1989
New School: 1990 - 1996
Bling Era: 1997 - Present

The "old school" began with Kool Herc, not when rap music was recorded. The Golden Age is marked by the advent of sampling and a renewed lyrical technique by MCs... this happened around '86. It was also called the "new school." But many of these so-called eras overlap... the "pro-black" era overlapped with the golden age and new school, which was around '89-'91. And the "bling era" of mainstream rap music coincided with the "underground/indie" era, with groups like Company Flow, Black Star, Lyricist Lounge emcees, the Rawkus roster, and numerous white emcees etc. just exploding beneath the radar. In 2007, hip hop, I feel is at another turning point. I don't know what it is yet, though.
